It was November 1982. Interest rates had been as high as 17 ½%. I was a young father, supporting our family on real estate commissions. Mary was in the hospital with the birth of our third child. With no maternity health insurance coverage, I was challenged on how to pay for a hospital bill that was nine times more than our house payment and feed two toddlers who missed their Mama. The doorbell rang, and a neighbor was there with a large pan of lasagna. Thirty-four years later, that kind and generous act still stands out; helping us through one of our most difficult times.
