I don’t know how we qualified for our first home. I was a seasonal construction worker (roofing) and Mary was a newly hired special education school teacher. The payment was going to be $222.00 a month, dramatically higher than the $90.00 a month rent we had been paying for the upper floor of a condemned duplex.
The City of Minneapolis paid a generous relocation allocation if we bought in Minneapolis; that became our down payment. We had our first baby in that home at 3519 Emerson, and I decided to put my newly acquired journalism degree to work, selling Real Estate. It was 1977. Thank you, Minneapolis.
